The FBA inbound placement service fee is a per-unit charge Amazon adds when you send a shipment to one location and let Amazon spread the inventory across its network. In 2026 it can run from $0.14 to $1.90 per unit on standard-size products, and for a seller moving 10,000 units a month it is a line item worth thousands of dollars.
This guide uses Amazon's own rate table (checked October 2026), works through a 10,000-unit example, and shows the break-even point where splitting your shipment to avoid the fee actually saves money.
In 2026 the FBA inbound placement fee is $0.14 to $1.90 per unit for standard-size products sent to a single location (minimal splits), and $0 with Amazon-optimized splits, which require at least five identical cartons or pallets per item. Lower it by shipping identical cartons to the destinations Amazon assigns, but only when the added freight costs less than the fee you avoid.
What is the FBA inbound placement fee, and when do you pay it?
It is Amazon's charge for placing your inventory across its fulfillment network. When you create a shipping plan, you pick one of up to three options. Minimal shipment splits: you send to the fewest locations, usually one, pay a fee, and Amazon decides how to place the inventory. Amazon-optimized splits: you send to multiple locations yourself and pay no fee. Partial splits (two or three locations, reduced fee) are offered for Bulky items only, not for standard-size.
Amazon shows a fee estimate for each available option when you build the plan, and charges the fee 45 days after the shipment is received, based on the quantity received. Which options you see depends on your products, quantities, current inventory in the network and capacity. Extra-large products do not pay the fee.
How much is the Amazon inbound placement fee in 2026?
For shipment plans created on or after January 15, 2026, minimal-split fees for standard-size products rose by about $0.05 per unit on average, Small standard got two weight bands, and Large standard items between 3 and 20 lb got five. Rates below are Amazon's published ranges per unit for a single inbound location. Amazon says the fee varies by inbound location, with higher fees for some West region destinations, so your exact rate sits somewhere in the range.
| Size tier | Unit weight band | Minimal splits (1 location) | Amazon-optimized (5+ locations) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard | 8 oz or less | $0.14 to $0.32 | No fee |
| Small standard | 8+ oz to 16 oz | $0.16 to $0.32 | No fee |
| Large standard | 12 oz or less | $0.20 to $0.40 | No fee |
| Large standard | 12+ oz to 1.5 lb | $0.24 to $0.50 | No fee |
| Large standard | 1.5+ lb to 3 lb | $0.34 to $0.60 | No fee |
| Large standard | 3+ lb to 5 lb | $0.38 to $0.76 | No fee |
| Large standard | 5+ lb to 7 lb | $0.40 to $0.98 | No fee |
| Large standard | 7+ lb to 10 lb | $0.42 to $1.20 | No fee |
| Large standard | 10+ lb to 15 lb | $0.44 to $1.50 | No fee |
| Large standard | 15+ lb to 20 lb | $0.55 to $1.90 | No fee |

Bulky items pay more. Amazon split the old Large Bulky tier into Small Bulky and Large Bulky on January 15, 2026. For a Large Bulky item of 5 lb or less, the minimal-split fee is $1.30 to $1.80 and partial splits are $0.55 to $1.25. At 42+ to 50 lb it is $5.50 to $6.50 minimal and $1.23 to $3.50 partial. Small Bulky items of 5 lb or less run $1.10 to $1.60 minimal and $0.55 to $1.10 partial. Optimized splits are free in every tier.
How much does the placement fee cost at 10,000 units a month?
Multiply your units by the per-unit rate for the weight band. At 10,000 units a month on minimal splits, a Large standard item in the 1.5 to 3 lb band costs $3,400 to $6,000 a month, or $40,800 to $72,000 a year. The table shows four common profiles.
| Profile (10,000 units/month) | Rate range per unit | Monthly fee, minimal splits | Yearly fee | With Amazon-optimized splits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard, 8 oz or less | $0.14 to $0.32 | $1,400 to $3,200 | $16,800 to $38,400 | $0 |
| Large standard, 12 oz or less | $0.20 to $0.40 | $2,000 to $4,000 | $24,000 to $48,000 | $0 |
| Large standard, 1.5+ to 3 lb | $0.34 to $0.60 | $3,400 to $6,000 | $40,800 to $72,000 | $0 |
| Large standard, 10+ to 15 lb | $0.44 to $1.50 | $4,400 to $15,000 | $52,800 to $180,000 | $0 |
These are Amazon's published ranges multiplied by 10,000 units. Your actual invoice depends on which fulfillment center receives the shipment. Pull your real figure from Amazon's Revenue Calculator and the fee estimate shown on each shipping plan before you decide.
How do you qualify for Amazon-optimized splits (no fee)?
Each shipment must include at least five identical cartons or pallets per item, and every carton or pallet must hold the same quantity of each item and the same item mix. Amazon's own examples show the failure mode: a plan where all five cartons hold the same quantities is eligible, but if one carton holds 50 units of an item instead of 100, or one carton is missing an item the others have, the plan is not eligible.
Use this pre-ship check before you build the plan:
- For each ASIN, work out whether you have enough units for 5 or more full, identical cartons.
- Fix the units per carton for each ASIN (for example 20) and keep it identical across all cartons, including the last one. Leftover units that do not fill a carton will not qualify, so plan them into a separate shipment and accept the fee on those units.
- For mixed-SKU cartons, keep the same item mix and the same quantity of each item in every carton.
- Get freight quotes to every destination Amazon assigns. This cost decides whether free placement is worth it.
When is splitting your shipment cheaper than paying the fee?
Splitting is cheaper when the extra freight and handling to reach every destination costs less than the fee you avoid. The test: fee avoided divided by cartons shipped equals your break-even extra freight per carton.
Worked example: 10,000 units a month of a Large standard item in the 1.5 to 3 lb band, packed 20 units per carton, which is 500 cartons. The minimal-split fee is $3,400 to $6,000 a month. Divide by 500 cartons and your break-even is $6.80 to $12.00 of extra freight and handling per carton. If sending to several destinations adds less than that per carton compared with one destination, optimized splits win. If it adds more, pay the fee.
| Step | Number | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly units | 10,000 | Large standard, 1.5+ to 3 lb band |
| Units per carton | 20 | Assumption for this example; use your real count |
| Cartons per month | 500 | 10,000 divided by 20 |
| Fee on minimal splits | $3,400 to $6,000 | $0.34 to $0.60 per unit |
| Break-even extra freight per carton | $6.80 to $12.00 | Fee divided by 500 cartons |
| Your quote for splitting | Your 3PL's quote | Compare to the break-even line above |
Small parcel to several destinations can eat the saving on heavy cartons, because each carton pays its own parcel rate. Pallet or truckload freight spread over several stops is where splitting tends to work better. The deciding input is your own freight quote per destination, not an industry average.
What else lowers the placement fee?
- Compare every option on the plan. Amazon shows a fee estimate for each placement option when you create the plan. Check all of them, and note that the fee can vary by inbound location, with higher fees for some West region destinations.
- Mind the weight-band edges. Fees are set by size tier and weight band. A Large standard item that drops from the 5+ to 7 lb band to the 3+ to 5 lb band moves from $0.40 to $0.98 down to $0.38 to $0.76 on minimal splits.
- Use the new seller credit if you qualify. New sellers who send their first shipment within 90 days of listing get $400 in credits that apply to the placement fee.
- Know the exemptions. Extra-large products do not pay the fee.
- Use partial splits on Bulky items. Two or three locations cut the Large Bulky fee for items of 5 lb or less from $1.30 to $1.80 down to $0.55 to $1.25.
Where Orderfy fits
Orderfy is a 3PL and Amazon FBA prep center in Garland, Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth). Orderfy Prep clients get Orderfy WMS (our proprietary inventory software, built in-house), photos of each shipment, and direct communication channels for 24/7 access to the warehouse team. Freight to Amazon is billed separately, and consolidated full-truckload (FTL) freight into Amazon costs less than small parcel.
How that connects to placement fees: the break-even math above turns on what it costs to move cartons to several destinations, and consolidated FTL is the kind of freight that can change that number. Ask any prep provider whether it builds multi-destination Amazon-optimized shipment plans, whether those move on consolidated FTL, and what it charges per destination or per carton.
Identical cartons are what Amazon-optimized splits require, so carton data matters. At Orderfy every outbound carton is weighed and measured and its contents are tracked accurately in the WMS, and prep orders are typically ready to ship to Amazon the same day.
Orderfy is probably not the right fit if you ship only a few hundred units a month, if your products are Extra-large (no placement fee applies), or if you send inventory straight from a factory to Amazon with no prep step. Amazon also ended its own US prep services on January 1, 2026, so most sellers now need a third party to prep; see our guide to the change and FBA prep pricing.
