Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) ships your Shopify orders from the inventory you already hold in FBA. At a few hundred orders a month, that is simple. At 5,000 or more, per-unit pricing, Q4 peak rates, plain packaging and a shared inventory pool matter more than the convenience.
At 5,000+ Shopify orders a month, Amazon MCF charges $9.24 for a single-unit order of a 12 to 16 oz item as of October 2026 ($8.93 plus the 3.5% fuel surcharge), or $9.54 at peak rates through January 14, 2027. A 3PL costs less when pick, pack, packaging and postage total less, and it can ship in your own branded boxes. MCF packaging is unbranded by default, not Amazon-branded.
How much does Amazon MCF cost per Shopify order in 2026?
MCF charges per unit, by size tier, shipping weight, delivery speed and the number of units in the order. Since May 2, 2026, a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge applies on top, and peak rates run from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027.
Standard speed (3 business days, click to delivery), per unit, before the 3.5% surcharge:
| Size tier and weight | 1-unit order | 2-unit order (each unit) | 3-unit order (each unit) | 4+ unit order (each unit) | 1-unit order at peak |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard, 4+ to 8 oz | $7.51 | $5.09 | $4.19 | $3.72 | $7.71 |
| Large standard, 4+ to 8 oz | $7.72 | $5.23 | $4.49 | $4.08 | $7.98 |
| Large standard, 12+ to 16 oz | $8.93 | $6.26 | $5.15 | $4.70 | $9.22 |
| Large standard, 1+ to 2 lb | $10.64 | $7.19 | $5.90 | $5.25 | $10.97 |
| Large standard, 2+ to 3 lb | $11.75 | $8.13 | $6.79 | $5.95 | $12.16 |
Sources: Amazon 2026 MCF fulfillment fees and the MCF peak rate card. Expedited (2 business days) costs more: $13.12 for a single 12 to 16 oz large standard unit at non-peak rates.
Other charges to include in the comparison:
- Fuel and logistics surcharge: 3.5% of MCF fulfillment fees, since May 2, 2026.
- Lithium batteries: $0.11 per unit added to the base fee.
- Blocking Amazon Logistics as a carrier: a 5% surcharge, waived until January 14, 2027.
- Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands: a 100% remote area surcharge on standard-size items.
- Storage, labeling, inbound and removal fees: the same as FBA. Standard-size storage is $0.78 per cubic foot a month from January to September and $2.40 from October to December (storage fees).
Is MCF cheaper than a 3PL at 5,000 to 25,000 orders a month?
MCF is cheaper only if a 3PL's pick, pack, packaging and postage add up to more than the MCF fee for the same order. For a 12 to 16 oz product at non-peak rates, that line is $9.24 for a one-unit order and $12.96 for a two-unit order, so the answer depends on the postage you can get.
Worked example (illustrative): an apparel brand ships 12 to 16 oz large standard units at standard speed. 70% of orders have one unit and 30% have two. The 3PL figures are example rates, not Orderfy's: $3.00 to pick and pack the first unit, $0.75 for each additional unit, and $0.40 for a branded mailer.
| Order type | MCF fee with 3.5% surcharge, non-peak | MCF fee with surcharge, peak | Example 3PL pick, pack and packaging | Postage budget before MCF is cheaper (non-peak / peak) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One unit | $9.24 | $9.54 | $3.40 | $5.84 / $6.14 |
| Two units | $12.96 | $13.56 | $4.15 | $8.81 / $9.41 |
| Blended (70% one unit, 30% two) | $10.36 | $10.75 | $3.63 | $6.73 / $7.12 |
At that mix, the monthly MCF fulfillment fees look like this, before storage and inbound fees:
| Shopify orders per month | MCF fees, non-peak | MCF fees, peak | Example 3PL pick, pack and packaging, before postage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 | $51,786 | $53,737 | $18,125 |
| 10,000 | $103,572 | $107,474 | $36,250 |
| 25,000 | $258,931 | $268,686 | $90,625 |
Read the last column as the room left for postage. If your 3PL's blended postage on these parcels is under $6.73 an order, the 3PL is cheaper at non-peak rates; at peak, the line moves to $7.12. Plug your own label cost into the 3PL cost calculator to check your mix.
Discounts narrow the gap. Under Amazon's 2026 Preferred Pricing, the 12-month program is open to sellers who shipped 1,200 to 23,000 MCF units in the past 12 weeks, with tiers from 5% off plus a $0.25 FBA credit per unit (1,200 to 7,000 units) to 15% off plus a $1 credit (over 19,001 units). The brand above at 5,000 orders ships about 18,000 units per 12 weeks, which falls in the 12% tier with a $0.75 FBA credit per unit. A 12% discount on the base fee brings the one-unit order from $9.24 to about $8.13, if the surcharge applies to the discounted fee. The benefits end after 100,000 MCF units or 12 months, and the credits offset FBA fees rather than paying cash. At 10,000 orders a month, the same mix exceeds 23,000 units per 12 weeks, so confirm eligibility with Amazon before you count on the discount.
Does Amazon MCF ship in Amazon-branded boxes?
No. MCF ships in unbranded packaging by default at no extra cost, with no Amazon branding on boxes, tape or polybags, according to Amazon's MCF FAQs. Some search summaries say otherwise as of October 2026, but Amazon's own pages are clear.
- Amazon may use other packaging when unbranded packaging would slow delivery. To require it, select "Only ship with blank boxes" when the order is created.
- Unbranded packaging does not cover items longer than 56 inches on the longest side or heavier than 49.9 lb.
- Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) is an option for products that can ship in their own packaging.
- Amazon Logistics may deliver MCF orders. Blocking it adds a 5% surcharge, waived until January 14, 2027.
What MCF does not offer is your own packaging. Amazon's MCF pages describe unbranded boxes and SIPP, with no option for your branded mailers, tissue or printed inserts. For a Shopify brand where the box is part of the product, that is the deciding factor, whatever the cost per order.
How does the MCF app for Shopify compare with a 3PL's Shopify app?
Both connect to Shopify natively. The differences are which inventory the app can see, where fees are reported and who you talk to when an order goes wrong.
| Question | Amazon MCF app for Shopify | A 3PL's Shopify app (what to ask for) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost of the app | Free; MCF is pay-as-you-go | Ask whether the integration is included |
| Inventory it ships from | Only units available in Amazon fulfillment centers; inbound units are not used | Units received and available at the 3PL |
| Partial and split orders | Ships the items assigned to the Amazon fulfillment location in an order | Ask whether split shipments are supported |
| Shipping rates at checkout | The app does not calculate rates; you configure them in Shopify | Rates come from your Shopify settings or the 3PL's carrier accounts; ask |
| Where fees appear | In Seller Central payment reports only | On the 3PL invoice; ask for an itemized one |
| Requirements | Amazon Seller Central account; US orders and US addresses | Signed agreement and an onboarding plan |
Sources: Amazon's MCF app for Shopify help page and Shopify Help Center. You do not need to sell on Amazon to use the MCF app, but you do need a Seller Central account. For how a 3PL integration moves orders and tracking, see how Shopify syncs with a 3PL.
What happens to your inventory split between FBA and Shopify?
MCF runs Shopify and Amazon from one FBA inventory pool; a 3PL means two pools. One pool needs less safety stock, while two pools keep each channel's demand from draining the other.
| Factor | MCF (one FBA pool) | 3PL for Shopify plus FBA for Amazon |
|---|---|---|
| Stock to forecast | One pool for both channels | Two pools, replenished separately |
| A Shopify promotion or launch | Draws down the same units Amazon customers buy | Draws down only the 3PL pool |
| FBA capacity limits | Shopify stock uses Amazon capacity | Shopify stock sits outside Amazon's limits |
| Low-inventory-level fee | MCF units count as shipped units and lower FBA days of supply | Shopify sales do not affect FBA days of supply |
| Q4 storage | FBA rate, $2.40 per cubic foot standard-size, October to December | The 3PL's contract rate; compare it per cubic foot |
| Inbound fees | FBA inbound fees, such as placement fees, apply to Shopify stock too | Freight into the 3PL; FBA inbound fees only on Amazon stock |
The fee interaction is easy to miss. Amazon's low-inventory-level fee counts MCF units as shipped units, so heavy Shopify volume through MCF can push an FNSKU under 28 days of supply and add $0.32 to $2.09 to every Amazon unit shipped. With a 3PL, a hybrid setup keeps the pools separate; see Shopify and Amazon from one warehouse and how to stop overselling on Shopify.
When does MCF fit, and when does a 3PL fit?
MCF fits brands with a small Shopify channel, single-unit orders and no need for branded packaging. A 3PL fits once Shopify is a main channel, orders carry several items or the unboxing matters.
| Situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few hundred Shopify orders a month, already on FBA | MCF | No second stock location to run |
| Mostly single-unit, light orders, plain packaging is fine | Compare both | MCF at $9.24 per order (12 to 16 oz, non-peak) against your 3PL quote including postage |
| Multi-item orders, bundles or kits | Usually a 3PL | Each extra MCF unit carries a full per-unit fee; at a 3PL it adds an extra pick and postage weight |
| Branded mailers, inserts or a designed unboxing | 3PL | MCF offers unbranded packaging only |
| Shopify demand peaks in Q4 | Usually a 3PL | MCF peak rates plus $2.40 per cubic foot FBA storage from October to December |
| Amazon stock must be protected from Shopify promotions | 3PL | Separate pools |
| Tight cash and one shared forecast | MCF | One pool needs less total safety stock |
Many brands at this volume use both: a 3PL for Shopify orders and FBA for Amazon, with MCF kept as backup capacity. The FBA vs 3PL guide covers the Amazon side of that decision.
Where does Orderfy fit?
Orderfy is a tech-enabled, modern 3PL for high-volume Shopify and Amazon brands, built Shopify first. It runs Shopify fulfillment and Amazon FBA prep from its warehouse in the center of the US, in Dallas-Fort Worth, so ground shipping reaches both coasts quickly without paying for air.
- Shopify app: natively integrated with Shopify, with real-time inventory sync, tracking sent to Shopify as soon as a label is created, and split shipments supported.
- One place for all inventory: a custom WMS built in-house for Shopify and Amazon sellers, included for clients, shows inventory and products, tracks every order at every stage and follows FBA prep from arrival to sellable at Amazon.
- Accuracy: Orderfy tracks a 99.9% order accuracy rate in its in-house WMS.
- Amazon side: lower-cost consolidated freight into Amazon, with many Amazon fulfillment centers nearby, so FBA stays replenished from the same building that ships your Shopify orders.
- Service: dedicated staff who know your brand, photo records of shipments, and direct communication channels for 24/7 access to the warehouse team. Orderfy handles large surges, including product launches and limited drops.
Orderfy is not the right fit for brands that need warehouses on both coasts for 1-day ground delivery, or for very low order volume, where MCF's simplicity often wins. For packaging, storage and postage terms, ask for a quote with your order mix and parcel weights so you can compare it line by line with your MCF fees.
FAQ

For light single-unit orders with plain packaging, MCF can be. For multi-item orders, branded packaging or heavy Q4 volume, a 3PL often costs less per order. Compare MCF's all-in fee with a 3PL's pick, pack, packaging and postage for your actual order mix.
