On a direct-to-consumer order, the surcharges on a UPS or FedEx label can cost more than the base rate. Residential delivery, delivery area, fuel and peak demand charges each follow their own rules, and fuel is charged on top of most of the others. This guide lists the 2026 amounts from the carriers' own rate pages and shows what they add to a month at 10,000 orders.

Quick Answer

In 2026, UPS and FedEx add four surcharges to a home delivery: a residential charge ($6.50 UPS Ground, $6.45 FedEx Ground at list), a delivery area surcharge for select ZIP codes ($6.55 to $8.85 residential), a weekly fuel surcharge (29.00% to 29.50% on ground in late October 2026, applied to most surcharges too), and peak demand fees of $0.50 to $0.80 per residential package through mid-January 2027.

A correction to Google's AI Overview for this query (October 2026): residential demand surcharges "over $9 per package" apply only to air residential packages for shippers above 20,000 packages a week. The ground ceiling in both carriers' high-volume tables is $8.00 per package.

Which surcharges do UPS and FedEx add to an ecommerce order in 2026?

Most Shopify orders pick up a residential charge and fuel; a share also pays a delivery area surcharge, and oversized or heavy parcels pay additional handling. The table lists published list amounts for domestic ground packages. Contract rates can differ.

How does the residential surcharge work, and how much did it rise?

The residential charge is a flat fee on every package delivered to a home, and for a DTC brand that is almost every order. For 2026, UPS raised its ground residential surcharge from $6.10 to $6.50 (6.6%), and FedEx raised its Ground and Home Delivery charge from $5.95 to $6.45 (8.4%).

FedEx defines a residential delivery as a shipment to a home or private residence, including a business operated from a home, or any address the shipper marks as residential. Because the fee is flat, it weighs most on light, low-cost parcels: on a package with a $9.00 base rate, a $6.45 residential charge adds 72% before fuel.

It is also the most valuable line to negotiate. Carrier contracts can carry a discount or cap on the residential charge; FedEx refers to these directly on its demand surcharge page. At 9,200 residential packages a month and 29% fuel, each $1.00 taken off the residential charge saves about $11,868 a month.

What is a delivery area surcharge, and which orders pay it?

A delivery area surcharge (DAS) applies to packages going to ZIP codes the carrier lists as harder to serve, usually rural or less dense areas. Each carrier publishes its own ZIP list with three tiers: standard, extended and remote.

For a home delivery, DAS is added to the residential charge. A FedEx Ground package to an extended residential ZIP pays $6.45 plus $8.80, or $15.25 in surcharges before fuel; a remote ZIP adds $16.75 instead.

To size it, run last quarter's shipping addresses against the carrier ZIP lists, or pull DAS lines from your invoices. For most brands it is a minority of orders, but at 10,000 orders a month even 10% to DAS ZIPs is 1,000 surcharges.

How is the fuel surcharge calculated in 2026?

Fuel is a percentage set each week from a government fuel index: ground services follow the U.S. Energy Information Administration's national average diesel price, and air services follow the U.S. Gulf Coast jet fuel price. For the week of October 26, 2026, UPS ground fuel is 29.50% and FedEx Ground fuel is 29.00%.

  • It moves weekly. UPS ground fuel ranged from 26.75% (week of August 3) to 30.25% (week of September 28, 2026) over the last 90 days of its published history.
  • It is charged on surcharges too. FedEx applies ground fuel to the net package rate plus residential, delivery area, additional handling, address correction, demand charges and others. UPS applies fuel to transportation charges and a published list of accessorial charges.
  • The tables change. From November 2, 2026, UPS uses new ground and air fuel tables. At the same diesel price, the ground percentage is 0.50 points higher: diesel at $6.25 to $6.34 a gallon moves from 29.50% to 30.00%.

Because fuel applies to the surcharges, a $6.45 residential charge really costs about $8.32 at 29% fuel. Any negotiation over fuel (a discount or a cap) therefore lowers the cost of every other surcharge as well.

What are the 2026 peak season (demand) surcharges?

Both carriers add per-package demand surcharges from late October 2026 to mid-January 2027, with the highest amounts between late November and late December. Additional handling and oversize demand charges started earlier, in late September.

A brand shipping 10,000 orders a month is far below the 20,000-a-week threshold on its own account. If you ship on a 3PL's carrier account, the carrier's customer is the 3PL, so the volume test and peaking factor are measured on the 3PL's total volume. Ask any 3PL how demand charges are passed through and whether its account falls under the high-volume tables.

USPS works differently. Its temporary holiday prices run from October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027 and raise commercial USPS Ground Advantage by $0.40 (zones 1-4) and $0.55 (zones 5-9) for parcels up to 3 lb (USPS, August 25, 2026). The USPS price list (Notice 123) shows no residential, delivery area or fuel surcharge on Ground Advantage; its add-ons are size-based fees, such as $4.50 for parcels over 22 inches long.

What do surcharges add to a month at 10,000 orders?

In this example they add about $11.67 per order in a normal month and $12.69 per order in the December peak, on top of a $9.00 base rate. The example uses FedEx Ground and Home Delivery list surcharges and the 29.00% fuel rate for the week of October 26, 2026. The $9.00 average base rate and the order mix are illustrative assumptions, not Orderfy rates or a market average.

Assumed mix: 10,000 packages a month, 92% residential (9,200), 700 to residential DAS ZIPs, 250 to extended residential ZIPs, 50 to remote ZIPs, 50 packages over the dimension threshold (zones 5-6), and 50 address corrections.

TotalAll lines$206,654.78$216,913.50
Cost per orderTotal / 10,000$20.67$21.69

Three things stand out. First, the residential charge is the largest surcharge by far, at 37% of the pre-fuel subtotal in a normal month. Second, about $20,357 of the normal month's fuel bill is fuel charged on surcharges rather than on transportation. Third, the peak month adds about $10,259 even though this brand never reaches the high-volume demand tables.

Your carrier or 3PL contract may price residential, DAS and fuel below list, so treat this as a list-price ceiling and check your own invoices line by line. For the rest of the fulfillment bill, see how much a 3PL costs.

How can a high-volume brand lower its carrier surcharges?

Start with the lines that touch every package (residential and fuel), then remove the avoidable ones (address corrections and additional handling).

  • Negotiate residential, DAS and fuel. In the example above, residential and fuel together cost more than the base rate, so a discount or cap on them can be worth more than the same discount on base rates. Check whether your contract excludes demand charges from those discounts.
  • Validate addresses before buying labels. Each correction costs $25.25 at UPS and $25.50 at FedEx at list, plus fuel.
  • Stay under additional handling triggers. FedEx applies it to packages over 48 inches on the longest side, over 30 inches on the second-longest side, over 105 inches in length plus girth, over 10,368 cubic inches or over 50 lb. Poly mailers and bubble mailers larger than 18 x 13 x 5 inches also trigger it (FedEx Service Guide 2026).
  • Use USPS where it fits. For light parcels, USPS Ground Advantage carries no residential, DAS or fuel line, so its quoted price is closer to the final price. Compare total landed cost per package, not base rates.
  • Plan peak volume. Demand charges are per package and change on fixed dates. Moving promotional volume earlier, as in a peak season plan, lowers the count of packages billed at the top rate.
  • Ship from the middle of the country. Additional handling is priced by zone, and fuel is a percentage of a base rate that rises with zone. Shorter average zones lower both.
  • Audit every invoice. Reconcile surcharges by tracking number each week, and dispute residential charges on packages that went to business addresses.

What should you ask a 3PL about carrier surcharges?

Ask how each surcharge reaches your invoice, in writing, before you sign. The questions below apply to any 3PL; see what a 3PL quote looks like and 3PL contract negotiation for the wider quote.

Where does Orderfy fit?

Orderfy is a tech-enabled, modern 3PL for high-volume Shopify and Amazon brands. Its Shopify fulfillment runs on a custom WMS built in-house for Shopify and Amazon sellers and included for clients, so you manage your whole inventory in one place. The Shopify app is natively integrated, inventory syncs in real time, and tracking reaches Shopify as soon as a label is created.

The warehouse sits in the center of the US (Dallas-Fort Worth), so ground shipping reaches both coasts quickly without paying for air, and a central location keeps average zones shorter for a national customer base than a single coastal building does. That matters for the zone-priced charges in this guide. Order accuracy is 99.9%, as tracked in Orderfy's WMS, shipments are photo-recorded, billing is weekly with autopay, and each brand has dedicated staff plus direct communication channels for 24/7 access to the warehouse team. Quotes are built from your numbers with every charge itemized.

Who it is not a fit for: brands that need warehouses on both coasts to offer 1-day ground everywhere, and very low-volume shippers. If you need a specific carrier mix or want to ship on your own carrier account, ask on the quote call.
