Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, so the carriers' last ship dates fall between Tuesday, December 15 and Wednesday, December 23. USPS, UPS and FedEx have all published their 2026 holiday schedules. This guide puts those dates in one table, then shows how a Shopify brand that ships from a 3PL turns them into the order-by dates customers see. For the wider Q4 plan (forecasts, inventory arrival, kits, returns), see the peak season planning guide.

Quick Answer

For Christmas 2026 in the contiguous US, the carriers' last recommended ship dates are: USPS Ground Advantage Dec 17, Priority Mail Dec 18, Priority Mail Express Dec 19 (delivery before Dec 25); UPS 3 Day Select Dec 21, 2nd Day Air Dec 22, Next Day Air Dec 23; FedEx Ground Dec 17 to Dec 23 by transit days, Express Saver Dec 21, 2Day Dec 22, overnight Dec 23 (delivery by Dec 24).

UPS does not publish a single Ground date: its schedule says to check transit time for each origin and destination. Some summaries list UPS 3 Day Select and FedEx Express Saver as December 19; both carriers' own 2026 schedules say Monday, December 21.

What are the 2026 holiday shipping deadlines for USPS, UPS and FedEx?

The table lists each carrier's own published 2026 dates for the contiguous US, as of October 2026. Note the different targets: USPS dates aim for delivery before December 25, while UPS and FedEx dates aim for delivery by Thursday, December 24.

All three carriers say their schedules can change. USPS adds that actual delivery depends on origin, destination, acceptance time and other conditions. Recheck the carrier pages in early December before you publish customer dates.

Which carrier dates change with distance?

Ground dates change with distance, and air dates do not. FedEx publishes Ground and Home Delivery as a ladder by transit days, and UPS asks shippers to check Ground transit for each lane, so the right ground date depends on where your warehouse is and where the order is going.

FedEx states that Ground and Home Delivery transit is typically 1 to 5 business days within the contiguous US (3 to 7 business days to and from Alaska and Hawaii). Its ladder skips the weekend: a 3-day shipment must leave on Monday, December 21, and a 4-day shipment on Friday, December 18. USPS says Ground Advantage between the contiguous US and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and US territories carries a service expectation of 10 days or more, so ground orders to those addresses need a much earlier date.

To find your own ladder, ask your 3PL for its ground transit map by carrier: the number of transit days from its warehouse to each zone or state. A warehouse in the center of the country reaches more of the country in fewer ground days than a warehouse on one coast, which moves the ground order-by date later for more customers.

How do you turn carrier deadlines into customer order-by dates?

Start from the carrier's last ship date, subtract the days your warehouse needs to get the order to the carrier, then subtract a buffer. The result is the last day a customer can order with that shipping option and still expect it by Christmas.

  1. Pick the carrier date for each rate you show at checkout. For ground, use the date for your slowest common transit band, not your fastest.
  2. Subtract warehouse time. Ask your 3PL for its daily order cutoff and whether orders received after it ship the next business day. An order placed after the cutoff on the carrier's last ship date misses that date.
  3. Subtract a buffer of at least one business day. Order volume, carrier pickup capacity and weather are all least predictable in mid-December.
  4. Skip days the warehouse or carrier does not work. Ask your 3PL whether it ships on Saturdays in December. UPS and FedEx Ground dates in 2026 skip the weekend of December 19 and 20.
  5. Publish one date per rate name, in the customer's terms: "Order by Dec 16 for Christmas delivery with Standard shipping."

The table applies that method with a one-business-day buffer and a warehouse that ships orders the same business day they arrive before its cutoff. Your dates move earlier if your 3PL needs more time, and later if you drop the buffer.

Rate shown at checkoutCarrier service usedCarrier last ship dateExample customer order-by date (1 business day buffer)

2-dayUPS 2nd Day Air or FedEx 2DayTue, Dec 22Mon, Dec 21
OvernightUPS Next Day Air or FedEx Standard OvernightWed, Dec 23Tue, Dec 22

If you show only one Standard rate for the whole country, publish the coast-to-coast date. A single date that is right for the farthest customer causes fewer support tickets than a later date that is wrong for a third of them.

How many orders arrive after the ground cutoff at 5,000 to 25,000 orders a month?

Enough to plan for. The worked example below uses illustrative numbers, not data from any brand or provider: it assumes 12 percent of December orders arrive after the ground order-by date and before December 23, and that 40 percent of those customers pay for a faster rate when the checkout shows one.

December orders (example)Orders after the ground order-by date (12%)Upgrade to 2-day or overnight (40%)Ship ground and arrive after Dec 25
5,000600240360
10,0001,200480720
15,0001,8007201,080
25,0003,0001,2001,800

Two decisions follow. First, the right-hand column is the number of customers who will receive a gift late, so your banner, rate names and confirmation email must tell them before they pay. Second, the upgrade column is real air volume: price your expedited rates so that each one covers its postage, and tell your 3PL how many air labels to expect in the last week.

What should you set in Shopify for holiday shipping?

Change three things in Shopify before December 1: rate names or delivery descriptions, estimated delivery dates, and the places customers see your order-by dates.

Rate names and delivery descriptions

Shopify shows the rate name at checkout, and you can add a custom delivery description to a flat rate. Put the Christmas date in the customer's path: "Standard (order by Dec 16 for Christmas)". After the date passes, change it to "Standard (arrives after Dec 25)" and make the 2-day and overnight rates the visible choice. Shopify notes that a custom delivery description does not create calculated delivery dates, so it shows your message but no calculated date.

Estimated delivery dates

Shopify's manual delivery dates add your fulfillment time to the carrier's transit time. Per Shopify Help, as of October 2026 the calculation treats Monday to Friday as business days, uses a 12 pm cutoff in the shipping origin's local time, and does not count weekends or holidays as fulfillment time. Set the fulfillment time to match your 3PL's real performance in December, not its August average.

Three limits matter for brands on a 3PL. Delivery dates do not work with shipping rates provided by third-party apps, or with negotiated FedEx-calculated rates. If checkout shows a mix of eligible and ineligible rates, Shopify displays no dates at all. Check which rate source your store uses before you rely on checkout dates, and use banners and rate names if dates will not show.

Banners and notifications

Show the order-by dates in the announcement bar, on product pages, in the cart and in the order confirmation email. Publish them as a short list by rate name. Update the banner the morning each date passes, and switch the message to expedited shipping, gift cards and "ships after the holidays" once the last air date is gone.

Which other holiday dates affect a 3PL's shipping schedule?

Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve change pickups. These dates come from the carriers' 2026 operations schedules.

DateUPSFedEx
Thu, Nov 26 (Thanksgiving)No pickup or deliveryAll locations and operations unavailable
Fri, Nov 27 (Black Friday)Normal pickup and deliveryEarly on-call and drop box pickups in some areas
Thu, Dec 24 (Christmas Eve)Normal delivery; pickup only for Air packages prearranged by Fri, Dec 18; no Ground pickupModified service, including modified Ground pickups
Fri, Dec 25 (Christmas Day)No pickup or deliveryAll locations and operations unavailable
Thu, Dec 31 (New Year's Eve)Air delivery only; Air pickup only if prearranged by Mon, Dec 28Modified service, including modified Ground pickups
Fri, Jan 1, 2027No pickup or deliveryAll locations and operations unavailable

UPS also notes that 2nd Day Air packages picked up on November 25 are scheduled for delivery on Monday, November 30, and that 3 Day Select packages picked up on December 22 are scheduled for December 28. FedEx says that from November 23 through January 4 it extends delivery commitment times by 90 minutes on select time-definite express services, such as Priority Overnight and 2Day AM.

What about Alaska, Hawaii and international orders?

Ship them much earlier. USPS recommends December 17 for First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and US territories, and warns that Ground Advantage to those locations takes 10 days or more. For international mail, USPS lists December 9 for First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International, and December 16 for Priority Mail Express International, for every region it lists.

UPS lists December 22 for Worldwide Expedited and December 23 for Worldwide Express to Canada, and December 21 and 22 for the same services to Mexico. FedEx lists December 23 for International Priority and December 21 for International Economy to Canada. Customs clearance can add time, so publish international order-by dates with a larger buffer, or stop promising Christmas delivery abroad.

Where does Orderfy fit?

Orderfy is a tech-enabled, modern 3PL for high-volume Shopify and Amazon brands, with its warehouse in the center of the US (Dallas-Fort Worth). For a holiday shipping plan, the location matters: ground shipping reaches both coasts quickly without paying for air, so more of your customers fall into the later ground dates in the ladder above.

  • Same-day shipping: orders ship the same day, and we confirm the daily cutoff when we set up your account, so you can calculate your order-by dates from a known number. See Shopify order fulfillment.
  • Shopify integration: the native Shopify app syncs inventory in real time and posts tracking to Shopify as soon as the label is created, so late-December customers get a shipping email right away. Split shipments are supported. See how the integration works.
  • Orderfy WMS: the proprietary inventory software we built in-house for Shopify and Amazon sellers, included for clients. It shows your inventory and tracks every order at every stage, so you can see what has shipped before each date passes. Many 3PLs license their WMS from a software vendor. Orderfy built its own.
  • Accuracy: Orderfy tracks 99.9% order accuracy in Orderfy WMS, which matters most when a wrong order cannot be replaced before Christmas.
  • Surges: each brand has dedicated staff who know its products, and Orderfy handles large surges, including product launches and limited drops.
  • Proof and access: photo records of shipments, and direct communication channels for 24/7 access to the warehouse team when a promotion changes in December.

Orderfy is not the right fit for brands that need warehouses on both coasts for 1-day ground delivery everywhere, or for brands that ship only a few hundred orders a month. For December details such as weekend shipping, ask us when you request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the service. In the contiguous US, the latest recommended dates are USPS Priority Mail Express on Saturday, December 19, UPS Next Day Air and FedEx overnight services on Wednesday, December 23, and FedEx SameDay on December 24. Ground services end earlier: USPS Ground Advantage on December 17 and FedEx Ground between December 17 and 23 by transit time.

USPS recommends Thursday, December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, Friday, December 18 for Priority Mail and Saturday, December 19 for Priority Mail Express, for expected delivery before December 25 in the lower 48 states. USPS calls these recommended send-by dates, and actual delivery can vary.

Not a single one. The UPS 2026 year-end schedule lists UPS Ground as "check ups.com/ctc for details," because the date depends on the origin and destination. UPS also runs no Ground pickups on December 24, so the last Ground pickup before Christmas is Wednesday, December 23.

Yes. UPS lists normal delivery on Thursday, December 24, with pickups limited to prearranged Air packages. FedEx lists modified service on December 24, including modified Ground pickups. Both are closed on December 25.

Mostly no. USPS dates are recommendations for expected delivery, and UPS and FedEx call their schedules subject to change. Guarantees, where they exist, follow each carrier's service guide and terms, so build a buffer into the dates you publish.

Set them by December 1, once the carriers have published their schedules, and recheck them in early December. Use the slowest ground band you ship to, subtract your 3PL's processing time and add a buffer of at least one business day.

Your 3PL's cutoff is the carrier date minus the time the warehouse needs to ship an order. Ask your 3PL for its daily order cutoff, its December carrier pickup times and whether it ships on Saturdays, then apply the method in this guide.
