Shopify Shipping gives every Shopify store discounted labels from USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL. A 3PL buys labels on its own carrier accounts or on yours, and bills them in one of four ways. At 10,000 orders a month, a 30-cent difference per label is $3,000 a month, so the billing model matters as much as the headline discount.
Shopify Shipping rates and 3PL rates cannot be compared by headline discount. As of October 2026, Shopify advertises US discounts of up to 88% with USPS and 82% with UPS, but only on labels you buy in your Shopify admin for orders you ship yourself. A 3PL bills postage at pass-through cost, cost plus a markup, a rate card, or your own carrier account. Compare total postage on your last 90 days of shipments.
How do Shopify Shipping discounted rates work?
Shopify negotiates rates with carriers and sells you labels on its own carrier accounts. You buy each label in the Shopify admin, and the cost is billed through your Shopify bill.
The details that matter for a cost comparison, from Shopify's own pages as of October 2026:
- Discounts are ceilings. Shopify's shipping guide (September 12, 2026) lists US discounts of up to 88% with USPS, up to 82% with UPS and up to 80% with DHL and FedEx. The Help Center says the actual discount varies by package type, weight, destination, origin, location, Shopify plan and carrier.
- The rate is Shopify's account, not yours. For USPS, Shopify states that "the shipping rates that you're charged are based on Shopify's account with USPS" (Shopify Help).
- You need an eligible fulfillment location. US locations can buy USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL eCommerce and DHL Express labels (label requirements).
- Package data drives the price. Shopify uses origin, destination, dimensions and weight, and charges a price adjustment when the package details were wrong.
- Extras are part of the value. Shopify includes up to $200 of insurance on eligible US labels for Grow, Advanced and Plus stores with Shopify Payments active, and offers up to 3% cashback on labels bought with Shopify Credit (Shopify Shipping).
To see your own numbers, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery > Shipping labels > Calculate rates, then enter an origin, a destination, a package and a weight. Run it for your three or four most common package profiles and a spread of destinations.
Can you use Shopify Shipping rates with a 3PL?
Usually not for the orders the 3PL ships. Shopify Shipping labels are bought in your admin for locations you fulfill from yourself, while a 3PL that connects through a fulfillment app creates the shipment in its own system and sends tracking back to Shopify.
Shopify's fulfillment app guide describes the flow: you (or an automatic rule) send a fulfillment request, the service accepts it, picks and packs the order, and adds tracking to the order. Shopify also notes that some fulfillment apps let you connect their carrier accounts, so the rate a customer sees at checkout matches what the app charges you.
That changes the question. The real choice is between packing in-house on Shopify Shipping labels and the 3PL's postage model. If you want carrier-calculated checkout rates from your own UPS, FedEx or USPS account, Shopify requires third-party carrier-calculated shipping, which needs specific plans or an extra monthly fee (Shopify Help).
How do 3PLs bill postage?
3PLs bill postage in one of four ways. Each can be cheap or expensive, so ask which one applies and get it in writing.
| Billing model | How it works | What you see on the invoice | What to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pass-through at cost | The 3PL buys labels on its negotiated carrier accounts and bills the carrier charge as is | Label cost per tracking number | Is postage billed at the exact carrier charge, with no markup, in writing? |
| Cost plus markup | The 3PL's negotiated cost plus a percentage or a fixed amount per label | One postage figure per order; the markup may not be shown | What is the markup, and does it also apply to surcharges and adjustments? |
| Rate card | A fixed price table by service, weight and zone; the 3PL's margin sits inside the price | Rate card prices, not carrier prices | How and when does the card change when carriers raise rates? |
| Your own carrier account | The 3PL prints labels on your UPS, FedEx or USPS account and the carrier bills you | No postage on the 3PL invoice; carrier invoices come to you | Is there a per-label fee for using your account, and who handles claims and adjustments? |
A markup does not make a 3PL expensive on its own. A 3PL with a low negotiated base and a small markup can still beat Shopify Shipping, and a rate card with no visible markup can still cost more. The only number that compares is total postage on the same set of shipments. Our guide to what a 3PL quote looks like shows where postage sits on a quote.
Who gets cheaper postage at 10,000 orders a month?
Whichever option produces the lowest total on your actual shipment mix, and at this volume a few cents per label decides it. The table below uses example rates for a brand shipping 10,000 orders a month, mostly 1 to 2 lb parcels by ground. These are illustrative numbers, not quotes from Shopify, any carrier or Orderfy.
| Option (example) | Example average cost per label | Monthly postage at 10,000 orders | Difference vs lowest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Shipping, packed in-house from your location | $7.40 | $74,000 | +$5,000 |
| 3PL pass-through at its negotiated rate | $6.90 | $69,000 | Lowest |
| 3PL cost plus a 10% markup on the same base | $7.59 | $75,900 | +$6,900 |
| 3PL rate card | $7.25 | $72,500 | +$3,500 |
| Your own carrier account at a negotiated tier | $7.10 | $71,000 | +$2,000 |
Two lessons follow from the example. First, the same 3PL base rate can be the cheapest or the most expensive option depending on the billing model. Second, the gaps are small per label and large per year: the spread between the lowest and highest example is $0.69 a label, or $82,800 a year at 10,000 orders a month.
Use this table to size what a per-label difference is worth at your volume:
| Difference per label | 5,000 orders a month | 10,000 orders a month | 25,000 orders a month | Per year at 10,000 orders |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $0.10 | $500 | $1,000 | $2,500 | $12,000 |
| $0.25 | $1,250 | $2,500 | $6,250 | $30,000 |
| $0.50 | $2,500 | $5,000 | $12,500 | $60,000 |
| $1.00 | $5,000 | $10,000 | $25,000 | $120,000 |
Postage is only one line. Moving to a 3PL also replaces in-house labor, space and packing supplies with fulfillment fees, which our in-house vs 3PL cost per order model covers line by line.
Why does the warehouse location change the comparison?
Because carriers price by distance. The same rate card costs more per label when the average parcel travels further, so a 3PL in a different location from your own warehouse changes the result even at identical rates.
USPS's published commercial Ground Advantage prices in Notice 123 (effective October 4, 2026) show the scale. A 1 lb parcel costs $8.55 to zone 4, $9.29 to zone 5 and $11.22 to zone 8. Moving the average parcel from zone 5 to zone 4 saves $0.74 a label at that weight, which is $7,400 a month at 10,000 orders. Negotiated rates are lower than published prices, but distance raises them in the same way.
So compare options from their real origins. Shopify Shipping prices labels from your location. A 3PL prices them from its warehouse. Ask each 3PL to re-rate your shipment file from the warehouse that would ship your orders.
What else goes on the postage line besides the base rate?
Surcharges, adjustments and insurance. Two options with the same base rate can produce different invoices once these are added.
- Surcharges: residential, delivery area, fuel and peak surcharges are added on top of the base rate. Ask whether a 3PL passes them through at cost or marks them up.
- Adjustments: carriers re-measure parcels. Shopify charges a price adjustment when package details were wrong, and a 3PL bills adjustments too, so ask how they appear on the invoice.
- Insurance: Shopify includes up to $200 on eligible labels for some plans. A 3PL label may not include coverage, so price insurance separately if your orders are high value.
- Address corrections: a wrong address can add a fee per parcel. Ask whether addresses are validated before labels are bought.
How do you run a fair rate comparison?
Re-rate the same shipment file under every option. A rate quote on one sample package tells you little; a 90-day file tells you what you would have paid.
- Export 60 to 90 days of shipments with weight, dimensions, destination ZIP, service and the label cost you paid.
- Price your most common package profiles in Shopify's rate calculator, or use your Shopify label history.
- Send the same file to each 3PL and ask for a re-rate from the warehouse that would ship your orders, including surcharges.
- Ask each 3PL to name its billing model in writing: pass-through, markup (with the figure), rate card, or your own account.
- Ask what happens to postage when carriers announce rate increases, and how much notice you get.
- Compare total monthly cost, postage plus fulfillment fees, using a model like our 3PL cost breakdown.
If one 3PL will not re-rate your file or will not state its billing model, treat its postage figure as unverified.
Where does Orderfy fit?
Orderfy is a tech-enabled, modern 3PL for high-volume Shopify and Amazon brands. Every Shopify fulfillment quote is built on your numbers, with every charge itemized, including how postage is billed. Send your shipment file with a quote request and compare it line by line with your current costs.
- Location: the warehouse is in the center of the US (Dallas-Fort Worth), so ground shipping reaches both coasts quickly without paying for air.
- Software: Orderfy WMS, the proprietary inventory software we built in-house for Shopify and Amazon sellers, is included for clients, so you manage your whole inventory in one place. Many 3PLs license their WMS from a software vendor. Orderfy built its own.
- Shopify: the Orderfy app is natively integrated with Shopify, inventory syncs in real time, and tracking reaches Shopify as soon as a label is created. See how Shopify syncs with a 3PL.
- Billing and proof: weekly billing with autopay, and photo records of shipments.
- Access: direct communication channels for 24/7 access to the warehouse team.
Orderfy is not the right fit for brands that need warehouses on both coasts for one-day ground delivery, or for brands shipping a few hundred orders a month. If you want labels printed on your own carrier account, ask about it when you request a quote.
Frequently asked questions
Sometimes. Shopify's discounts are strong for brands shipping their own orders, but a 3PL with good negotiated rates and a closer warehouse can cost less per label. The answer depends on the 3PL's billing model and your zone mix, so re-rate a real shipment file before you decide.
The rate a customer sees at checkout is what you configure: a flat rate, free shipping, or a carrier-calculated rate, to which you can add or subtract a handling fee. Label costs rise with weight, box size and distance, and Shopify uses your default package at checkout. If rates look high, check product weights and the default package dimensions first.
Shopify connects stores with selected 3PL partners through the Shopify Fulfillment Network. As of September 2026, Shopify lists Flexport, Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment, ShipBob and the DHL Fulfillment Network as current partners. Independent 3PLs connect through their own Shopify apps.
There is no single price. Shopify charges the discounted label rate for the carrier, service, weight, dimensions, origin and destination, and the discount depends on your plan. Use the rate calculator in Settings > Shipping and delivery to preview your rates.
Some 3PLs add a markup to their negotiated carrier cost or build a margin into a rate card. Others pass postage through at cost and earn on fulfillment fees. Ask which model applies and get the answer in your contract.
It makes sense when your own negotiated rates beat the 3PL's and you want rates that move with you if you change warehouses. You then handle carrier invoices, adjustments and claims yourself. Ask the 3PL whether it supports your account and charges any per-label fee. The 3PL contract guide covers the clauses to check.
