Most brands do not leave ShipMonk because of one bad week. They leave because a model that fit at 1,000 orders a month stops fitting at 10,000. This guide skips the generic top-10 list and sorts the alternatives by the problem that is making you look: the monthly minimum, big or heavy products, support, warehouse count, or software.
The best ShipMonk alternative at 5,000+ orders a month depends on what is failing. For a monthly minimum that does not flex, get any replacement's minimum formula in writing. For heavy or bulky products, look at Red Stag. For several warehouses, look at ShipBob. For one central warehouse with direct access to the people packing, look at Orderfy.
Why do brands at 5,000+ orders a month leave ShipMonk?
The reasons cluster into five problems, and each points to a different alternative. Competitor blog posts list the same themes: Ringly (September 21, 2026) cites per-pick fees that punish bundles at scale, surprise billing and a long offboarding window, and ShipCalm (April 10, 2026) adds limited support as accounts grow and fewer warehouses than larger networks. Both are written by companies with something to sell, so use them as a list of questions to test, not as proof.
ShipMonk's own pricing page explains the fee structure behind several of them. Its quotes list platform, onboarding and add-on technology fees; special projects such as counting, labeling and kitting are quoted per project; lot control is billed per carton; fragile wrapping carries an extra charge based on product dimensions; and a subscription batch under 50 orders carries a batching fee. None of that is hidden, but it is quote-based, so the total depends on your order profile.
| Your problem | What to check in your ShipMonk terms | Alternative to look at first |
|---|---|---|
| The monthly minimum does not flex with a slow month | How the minimum is calculated and what it is measured against | Any 3PL that quotes a lower or no minimum; get the formula in writing |
| Big, heavy or fragile products | Fragile wrapping and dimension-based charges; carrier surcharges on large parcels | Red Stag Fulfillment |
| Support feels like a queue | Named contact, response time in writing | A 3PL with direct access to the warehouse team |
| You need more warehouses or international reach | Where your customers are and what your delivery promise is | ShipBob or staying with ShipMonk's multi-site network |
| You need certifications or B2B | Certificate copies and EDI scope | Ask each provider to show its certificates and EDI scope |
What if the monthly minimum is the problem?
Then the fix is not "a cheaper 3PL" but a minimum you can live with in your slowest month. ShipMonk's pricing page says the monthly minimum is your monthly order volume multiplied by your first-item pick fee, reduced by 20%. It does not publish the pick fee, so this table uses an example fee of $1.25. It is an example for the arithmetic, not a ShipMonk or Orderfy rate.
On a 10,000 order forecast, the minimum is 10,000 x $1.25 x 0.8 = $10,000, which works out to $1.00 per forecast order. The table shows what a slow month does if the minimum is measured against pick fees only:
| Orders shipped | Pick fees at $1.25 per order | Minimum on a 10,000 order forecast | Shortfall if measured against pick fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | $12,500 | $10,000 | $0 |
| 8,500 | $10,625 | $10,000 | $0 |
| 7,000 | $8,750 | $10,000 | $1,250 |
| 5,000 | $6,250 | $10,000 | $3,750 |
Whether the minimum is measured against pick fees only or against all fees on the invoice changes the answer, so ask the exact question. The same question applies to any replacement: "What is the monthly minimum, how is it calculated, and what counts toward it?" Our guide to negotiating a 3PL contract covers minimums, term and renewal.
What if your products are big, heavy or fragile?
Then a specialist can beat a generalist. Red Stag's site says it is for products bigger than a toaster or heavier than 10 pounds, guarantees zero shrink, zero mispicks and zero late shipments or it pays, and says it negotiates the additional handling and oversize surcharges and the dimensional divisor with carriers and passes the savings on. It runs two locations, Sweetwater, TN and Salt Lake City, UT, and lists FDA registration and serial and lot tracking.
The trade-off is the reverse for small, light items, which is most Shopify apparel, beauty and supplement catalogs. If your parcels are small, the specialist's strengths do not apply. See Orderfy vs Red Stag Fulfillment for a side-by-side.
What if support is the problem?
Test it before you sign rather than reading reviews. ShipMonk gives every client access to its "Happiness Engineers." Red Stag offers a Core tier with U.S.-based account support and a Strategic tier with a dedicated Client Success Manager and a priority three-hour response on business days. ShipBob says each fulfillment center has on-site support reps.
Ask each 3PL three things: who owns my issue by name, how fast will I get an answer in writing, and can I reach the warehouse team directly when an order is stuck. The answer to the third is what separates a ticket queue from a warehouse you can talk to.
What if you need more warehouses?
Then you need a multi-node network, and a single-warehouse 3PL is the wrong tool. ShipMonk lists multiple U.S. sites and sites abroad on its locations page. ShipBob says it ships to more than 250 destinations and has fulfillment centers in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia and Europe. If you promise two-day delivery to both coasts and most of your orders sit there, split inventory can pay for its extra receiving and storage cost.
If your demand is spread across the country, a single central warehouse can serve it without splitting stock. Our guide on Southeast 3PL vs central warehouse shows how to test it with three months of orders by destination state.
What if software and integrations are the reason?
Check what you would lose before you move. ShipMonk says its proprietary platform includes a WMS, OMS and more, and that it integrates with over 100 shopping carts, marketplaces and solution providers. ShipBob says its software and turnkey integrations are free for all customers. Whichever provider you pick, test the Shopify connection on your own store before you sign: ask how often inventory syncs, how fast tracking reaches Shopify and whether split shipments work.
How do you leave ShipMonk without a stockout?
Treat it as a project with a date, and start by reading your agreement. This checklist works for any 3PL move at 5,000+ orders a month:
- Read your agreement for the term, the notice period and what the monthly minimum does during notice.
- Pull an inventory report by SKU and quantity, and note any aged or damaged stock you do not want to move.
- Get the new 3PL's receiving instructions and ask for a written first-inbound plan.
- Move a first shipment that covers your top SKUs, and keep the old warehouse shipping while it is received.
- Cut over SKU group by SKU group, and check counts in both systems each day for a week.
- Send the rest of the stock by LTL or pallet, and confirm final counts before you close the old account.
- Reconcile the last invoices against the receipts, and file claims for any variance within the window.
Where Orderfy fits
Orderfy is a tech-enabled, modern 3PL for high-volume Shopify and Amazon brands. Our warehouse is in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, in the center of the US, so ground packages reach both coasts from one location. Orderfy WMS, our proprietary WMS built in-house, is included for clients and shows your inventory and every order at every stage. Inventory sync with Shopify is real time through a native integration.
Every shipment is documented with photos, and clients have direct communication channels to the warehouse team around the clock. Order accuracy is 99.9%, tracked in the WMS, and we can put commitments in a written SLA. We help new clients move over, including software setup and written onboarding documentation, and billing is weekly with autopay.
Orderfy is not the right fit if you need several U.S. warehouses, international fulfillment, or a specialist for very large or heavy products. For the head-to-head, see Orderfy vs ShipMonk, and for a three-way decision guide, see Orderfy vs ShipMonk vs ShipBob at 10,000+ orders. If you are also weighing ShipBob, read our ShipBob alternatives guide.
Frequently asked questions
Common reasons are per-pick fees that add up on multi-item orders, a monthly minimum that does not flex in slow months, support that is harder to reach as an account grows, and a need for more or fewer warehouses. These come from competitor blogs and reviews, so confirm each against your own invoices.
ShipMonk says it is your monthly order volume multiplied by your first-item pick fee, reduced by 20%. The pick fee is set in your quote, so the dollar amount is different for every brand.
Red Stag Fulfillment positions itself for products heavier than 10 pounds or bigger than a toaster, with a zero shrink, zero mispick and zero late shipment guarantee. Ask for the written terms.
Providers differ and quotes change. Ask for the minimum formula in writing from every 3PL on your list. Orderfy, for example, has no volume minimum, and smaller accounts pay a monthly account fee depending on volume and services.
It depends on your notice period, how fast you can send stock and how many SKUs you run. A first inbound for your top SKUs can be received quickly while the old warehouse keeps shipping, then you cut over in groups. Read your agreement for the notice period first.
Yes, many brands run two for a period. Split by SKU or by region, keep Shopify inventory allocated per location, and compare cost per order and error rates over a full month before you move everything.
