Flexport runs one of the most visible fulfillment networks for Shopify brands, and it's the 3PL built into Shopify's own Fulfillment Network app. For a brand shipping thousands of orders a month, the questions that decide whether it fits are how storage is priced in the fourth quarter, how much control you keep over packaging and inventory placement, what the service levels commit to, and what it costs to move out.

Quick Answer

The main Flexport fulfillment alternatives for Shopify brands are multi-warehouse 3PLs such as ShipBob and ShipMonk, Red Stag Fulfillment for heavy goods, and central-US 3PLs such as Orderfy. Flexport's minimum has been $5,000 a month since January 1, 2026, not $500, and Flexport says it mainly affects merchants under about 500 orders a month. Compare pricing model, fourth-quarter storage, packaging control and removal fees instead.

What does Flexport fulfillment offer as of October 2026?

Flexport offers multichannel ecommerce fulfillment from its own warehouse network, priced with an all-in fulfillment fee and connected to Shopify inside the Shopify admin. Its product page lists seven warehouses with more than five million square feet across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, with five US hubs near Newark, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles, and states that 87% of US consumers live within two days of a Flexport fulfillment center (Flexport eCommerce Fulfillment).

  • Pricing model: the base domestic rate includes standard inbound receiving, inventory placement (unit-based pricing only), pick and pack, packaging material and transportation. Fees are charged per unit (unit-based) or per package by zone (zone-based), and rate cards are in the Flexport portal, not published (Pricing Overview).
  • Minimum: a $5,000 monthly minimum fulfillment spend applies to all accounts from January 1, 2026, raised from $500 (2026 Pricing FAQs, Monthly Minimum Fee).
  • Service levels: published targets of 98% same-day shipment for orders received by 2 PM ET, 99% order accuracy, more than 95% on-time delivery and 98% inventory accuracy (Service Level Agreements).
  • Channels and services: 50+ ecommerce and retail platforms, international shipping with DDP and DDU options, dropship compliance for over 60 retailers, freight, and prep (Flexport eCommerce Fulfillment).
  • Shopify: Flexport is integrated directly into the Shopify admin through the Fulfillment Network app, while other 3PLs in that app connect by installing their own apps (Shopify Help Center).

The history explains the Shopify link. In May 2023 Flexport announced it was acquiring the assets of Shopify Logistics, including Deliverr, which made it the primary provider of Shop Promise delivery options in the Fulfillment Network app (Flexport blog, May 4, 2023). Shopify completed the sale on June 6, 2023 and received stock representing a 13% equity interest in Flexport (Shopify press release).

Is Flexport's monthly minimum $500 or $5,000?

It's $5,000 a month as of October 2026. Some current search summaries still quote $500, which was the minimum before January 1, 2026 (2026 Pricing FAQs). If your monthly spend on fulfillment, reserve storage, parcel, freight booked in the Seller Portal, pallet and case handling, label services, prep and card processing is below $5,000, Flexport charges the difference (Monthly Minimum Fee).

Flexport says it expects the fee to affect mainly merchants fulfilling under roughly 500 orders a month. A brand shipping 1,000 to 10,000 orders clears it, so at that volume the minimum isn't a reason to switch either way.

Why do Shopify brands look for a Flexport alternative?

Shopify brands shipping thousands of orders look for a Flexport alternative over cost structure and control, not entry requirements. Each point below comes from Flexport's own help center, and each one is a strength for some brands and a drawback for others.

  • Shipping is inside the fulfillment fee. Flexport's base rate includes transportation. Per-order cost is predictable, but postage isn't a separate line you can audit against carrier rates (Pricing Overview).
  • Storage costs about three times more in the fourth quarter. Standard storage is $0.81 per cubic foot per 30 days from January through September and $2.40 from October through December, with a minimum of $0.10 per SKU per day. Units stored more than 365 days pay $6.90 per cubic foot per 30 days.
  • Inventory is split across hubs. Flexport places inventory near demand. On forwarding plans, it estimates the first ~20% of a shipment is received in 3-4 calendar days from arrival at its crossdock and the remaining ~80% in 4-11 days; direct inbounds to a fulfillment center are estimated at 1-3 calendar days (Service Level Agreements). At our warehouse, inbound stock is received within 24 hours of delivery and is typically sellable in less than 1 business day.
  • Custom packaging is an exception. Flexport supports custom boxes, mailers, inserts and packing slips "on an exception basis", arranged through account management.
  • Service levels are targets with exclusions. Outbound SLAs don't apply during the first 90 days of onboarding or during unplanned spikes above forecast. Volume 10-15% above forecast ships within 24 business hours, more than 15% above forecast needs a custom SLA, and no more than 5% of daily volume can arrive in the final hour before cutoff. Those terms matter for product launches and limited drops.
  • Extra work is billed by the hour. Special projects, cycle counts, inspections and restocking are $48 per hour, and card payments carry a 3% processing fee (ACH has none).

Flexport has clear strengths too: multiple US hubs for 2-day reach, international fulfillment, freight forwarding from the same company, retailer dropship compliance and direct integration into the Shopify admin without a separate app. For brands that want those, it remains a strong option. The best Shopify 3PLs comparison covers Flexport alongside eight others.

Should you keep inbound freight with Flexport if you move fulfillment?

Price the freight and the fulfillment as two separate decisions. An importing brand shipping from Germany asked us whether we could beat Flexport on its inbound freight, and the question shows how closely the two get tied together. Freight booked in the Flexport Seller Portal counts toward the $5,000 monthly minimum (Monthly Minimum Fee), and on forwarding plans inbound stock goes through a crossdock before Flexport splits it across hubs (Service Level Agreements). If you move fulfillment, get a freight quote for the ocean or air leg to the new warehouse on its own, then compare the warehouse work on your own orders. We quote inbound freight for clients, including imports from overseas, so you can set our quote for that leg next to Flexport's.

How much does Flexport storage and removal cost?

Storage and removal fees are the two Flexport costs a brand can model from published rates. The inventory figures below are illustrative assumptions (about 3 units in stock per monthly order, at 0.1 cubic feet and 0.5-1 lb per unit); the rates are Flexport's published rates as of October 2026.

Monthly orders (example)Units in stock (example)Cubic feetStorage per 30 days, Jan-Sep ($0.81/cu ft)Storage per 30 days, Oct-Dec ($2.40/cu ft)Storage per yearRemoval to leave ($1.53/unit, 0.5-1 lb)
2,0006,000600$486$1,440$8,694$9,180
5,00015,0001,500$1,215$3,600$21,735$22,950
10,00030,0003,000$2,430$7,200$43,470$45,900
25,00075,0007,500$6,075$18,000$108,675$114,750

The fourth quarter accounts for about half of the yearly storage bill in this example (3 of 12 months at roughly three times the rate), so peak inventory build is when storage cost is highest. Removal is a switching cost you can price ahead of time. Flexport charges per unit by billable weight ($1.04 up to 0.5 lb, $1.53 up to 1 lb, $2.27 up to 2 lb, then $2.89 plus $1.06 per extra pound), and lists removals at 10-14 business days, up to 30 business days for orders of 5+ SKUs or 5,000+ units (Pricing Overview, Service Level Agreements). Fees here exclude the per-SKU daily minimum and long-term storage. Plug your own volumes into the 3PL cost calculator.

Which Flexport alternatives fit which Shopify brand?

Should you choose a multi-hub network or one central warehouse?

Choose a multi-hub network if a large share of your orders needs 1-2 day ground delivery on both coasts and you can carry enough stock at every hub. Choose one central warehouse if you'd rather hold a single inventory pool and accept ground transit to the coasts.

Splitting inventory has costs that don't show on a rate card. Each hub needs its own safety stock, inbound shipments are divided or forwarded between sites, and a SKU can be out of stock at one hub while another holds plenty. A central warehouse in the middle of the US keeps one pool, one receiving dock and one count. Pull three months of orders by ship-to state before you decide, and check what share sits on each coast.

What should you check before you move off Flexport?

Plan the exit and the new 3PL together, so orders keep shipping while stock moves.

  1. Price the removal. Draft a removal order in the Flexport portal for a quote, and check the timeline for large orders and for peak removal months (February, March, August and September).
  2. Time the move. Avoid moving inventory into October through December, when Flexport storage is highest and every 3PL is busiest.
  3. Get the new 3PL's receiving time, order accuracy and on-time shipping commitments in writing, and what happens when it misses them. Ours: order accuracy is 99.9%, tracked in Orderfy WMS, and written SLAs with fee credits are available.
  4. Test the Shopify connection: orders, inventory sync, tracking, split shipments and bundles. The steps are in how Shopify 3PL integration works.
  5. Get an itemized quote that separates pick and pack, packaging, storage and postage, so you can compare it with Flexport's all-in rate on the same orders.
  6. Find out how the new 3PL handles launches and volume above forecast, and whether its service levels apply from the first month.

What changes when you move from Flexport to Orderfy

Your stock sits in one warehouse in the center of the US (Dallas-Fort Worth) instead of across hubs. We receive it within 24 hours of delivery, and it's typically in your sellable inventory in less than 1 business day. Orderfy WMS, the proprietary software we built in-house for Shopify and Amazon sellers, connects to Shopify through our native app with real-time stock sync, and every charge is itemized before you sign, so you can line our quote up against Flexport's all-in rate order by order. Dedicated staff who know your brand handle large surges, including product launches and limited drops. We're not the right fit if you need warehouses on both coasts for 1-day ground delivery or ship only a few hundred orders a month.

Frequently asked questions

For Shopify ecommerce fulfillment, the providers most often compared with Flexport are ShipBob and ShipMonk (multi-warehouse networks), Red Stag Fulfillment (heavy and bulky goods), Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment for brands whose stock already sits in FBA, and central single-warehouse 3PLs such as Orderfy. In freight forwarding, Flexport competes with a different set of companies.

No. Shopify sold the majority of its logistics business to Flexport in 2023 and received stock representing a 13% equity interest in Flexport, in addition to the stake it already held. Flexport is Shopify's integrated partner in the Fulfillment Network app.

Yes. As of October 2026, the Fulfillment Network app also lists Amazon MCF and Buy with Prime, Bigblue, DHL Fulfillment, GoBolt, Mayple, Shipfusion and ShipBob, which connect by installing their own apps. Any 3PL with a Shopify app can fulfill your orders outside the Fulfillment Network too.

Flexport lists removal orders at 10-14 business days, and up to 30 business days for orders with 5+ SKUs or 5,000+ units. Processing can take 30 days or more in the holiday season and in peak removal months (February, March, August and September), so start early.
